On August 31, John Babcock (PC ‘87, Trumpet; BM ’87, Music Education; MM ‘89, Trumpet) retired from the United States Naval Academy Band (Annapolis, MD) after 22 years of service. While in the band, Babcock performed as a trumpeter with the concert band, brass quintet, ceremonial band, marching band and various other chamber ensembles. He founded the USNA Band Brass Ensemble in 1996 and served as leader of the ensemble until his retirement. Connections between the ensemble and Peabody include performing in Friedberg Hall, being conducted by J. Ernest Green, Gene Young and Murray Sidlin. Babcock now teaches middle school music and coaches football and lacrosse at Calvert School (Baltimore, MD). He also continues to contract for musical services as a member of Carrollton Brass, serves as principal trumpet of the Bach Concert Series in Baltimore, and freelances.
Bob Parker (BM ’87, Music Education, PC ’87, Trumpet) won the WHAS11 Excel award, an honor bestowed upon exceptional teachers in the Louisville, KY area. During his tenure as the band director at South Oldham Middle School, the number of students in the band program has tripled. Parker and has been teaching for 22 years. Jazz trumpeter/producer Dontae Winslow (BM ’97, MM ’99, Trumpet) is touring with Justin Timberlake and Jay Z this summer for the sold-out Legends of the Summer Stadium Tour. On August 8, he performed at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Winslow is also seen in Timberlake’s new videos Take Back the Night and Suit & Tie. He was profiled in the Johns Hopkins’ HUB.
