The results of the 2012 Rhapsody Jazz Critics’ Poll were announced today, and Devin Gray’s debut disc, Dirigo Rataplan, came in at #3 in the “Best Debut Album” category. One of his teachers, Michael Formanek, appears on the album along with trumpeter Dave Ballou and saxophonist Ellery Eskelin. Gray returns to Baltimore on March 26th, when he’ll perform with the Out of Your Head Collective at Windup Space.
Toby Cormack, student of Andréa Picard Boecker, sang the role of Amahl in “Amahl and the Night Visitors” by Menotti in two performances at St. Anne’s church in Annapolis on Sunday, Jan. 6. The performance was under the direction of J. Ernest Green.
Ed Goldstein (BM ’76, Music Education, Tuba; MM ’78, Tuba) coordinated the music for the series House of Cards, premiering this month on Netflix. Several scenes from the movie were filmed at Peabody, which served as Georgetown’s Hotel Cotesworth.
Baritone William Sharp will give a master class at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on Monday, Jan. 21, at 7:30 pm.
Choreographer Carol Bartlett, Peabody Dance artistic director, passed away at her home on Dec. 15 while in hospice care. Born in England, she studied there and in Switzerland before moving to California, where she taught and founded her own company. Since 1988, she was the backbone and inspirational leader of the Peabody Preparatory’s Dance Department, planning, teaching, and serving as chief choreographer for its productions. Services are private. A public celebration of her life will take place on Sunday, April 7, at 7:30 pm in Peabody’s Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall.
