The Uganda-Baltimore Alliance: Cello faculty artist helps young African musicians Reply

Cello faculty artist Alison Wells, and 16-year-old daughter Olivia Sharkey, are traveling to Uganda this summer as part of TUBA, The Uganda-Baltimore Alliance, which reaches about 60 young Ugandan musicians in African villages. Peabody students, who are in a brass quintet called Eastern Edge, will spend four weeks in Uganda over winter break, helping mentor the group.

Piano student wins Golden Key scholarship Reply

Senior Kathryn Ledwell, a piano student of Yong Hi Moon, was the recipient of the 2012 Golden Key Undergraduate Achievement Scholarship of $5,000. Golden Key is an organization with chapters at universities throughout the world. The Johns Hopkins chapter is comprised of students in the top 15% of their class. The award was to recognize academics, leadership, and service.

Music Theory faculty member Mark Janello was a solo category winner of the Aliénor Awards, a competition to promote the creation of new music for the harpsichord. The composition, Six Harpsichord Miniatures, and other winners will be performed by a harpsichordist at the joint conference of the Southeastern and Midwestern Historic Keyboard Societies (SEHKS/MHKS) in Cincinnati on March 23, 2013. The audience will vote for their favorite pieces and help choose the winning compositions.
